A huge thank you to The Earth Trust who invited us to explore their site on Tuesday in order to learn more about their work with rivers. The Lock Keeper at Days Lock kindly gave us a demonstration of how a lock works to transport boats from a higher to a lower area of water. He, and the Earth Trust staff, also explained how weirs work and their role in helping control the flow of water along the River Thames. We learnt much more about how humans can affect flooding (both positively and negatively), and how useful the natural systems are that the Earth Trust have put into place on their land, such as: water meadows, ponds, flood plains and increased meanders. This all helps to alleviate flooding in our local area, as well as provide a wealth of eco systems.
After lunch, we were almost blown away from the top of Whittenham Clumps where we made a geographers sketch of the area, noting natural and man-made features. These sketches will come in useful as we learn more about the impact of humans on the environment, natural disasters, the water cycle and rivers over this term and next.
