Languages at Ladygrove

You may or may not be aware that modern foreign languages (MFL) is part of our curriculum here at Ladygrove. In FS & KS1 the children are introduced to languages which include German, French, Italian, Spanish by singing songs, playing games, answering the register etc.

In KS2 we ensure that MFL is part of our weekly timetable. In Year 3 they have been learning basic Spanish for example introducing themselves, talking about their families, colours, fruit, pets etc.

In year 4 the children start learning French weekly. They do lots of games, talking and singing to reinforce the language and have also started to write some French in exercise books. We are very fortunate to receive the support of Madame Warnock, a French teacher from DGS, who comes once a fortnight to help the children.
As you can see children also change the French weather display in their classroom each day.

By the time the children reach year 5 they are much more confident at speaking and listening and they now start to read and write in the foreign language. This year they have done some fantastic written work in French about towns and directions as well as holidays, hobbies and healthy food.

In year 6 we have done a great deal of French written work. This includes telling the time, writing about likes and dislikes and writing our own version of stories like the Hungry Caterpillar. The children will go on to learn more languages at secondary school.
