South Oxon High 5 Tournament

Wallingford Secondary School was the setting on a beautifully sunny day for this event. Our first match was against Whitchurch, who their manager described as “pretty good”. Indeed they were, but Sam managed to score both goals against them – equalling their score. Next we played old rivals Stephen Freeman. Emily scored five tremendous goals, ably supported by Rob, which they were unable to pull back due to the magnificent defence supplied by Sam and Sophie, so the score remained 5-0.
Shiplake were up next. Sam and Rosie kept throwing the ball over the net, so inevitably it went in eventually. Despite valiant attempts by Jack and Hannah, they pulled one back, so it finished as a 1-1 draw. Fir Tree came next – this we felt confident about, which was justified when Sophie scored the only goal of the game.
We had a nail-biting wait to see if we were through to the semis – we made it! Our opponents were South Moreton. A show of committed teamwork impressed Mrs Manthorpe and the crowd. Rob played a blinder in this match, scoring the first three goals, Hannah finished the game with a goal, so 4-0 meant we were in the final.
Benson proved to be a very good team and they scored two excellent goals. However, the Ladygrove team worked together and Sam fed Jack some really stylish balls which led to three great goals. Ladygrove 3 – Benson 2. Ladygrove are South Oxfordshire champions again.
Well done to a great group of young people for a great display of high 5 and thanks again to parents for transporting, photographing and supporting us.

And congratulations to Mrs Manthorpe for her magnificent coaching ... once again!
