Last Friday, to celebrate D Day, Year 3 visited Didcot Railway Centre to attend a special celebration event. Over 200 pupils were there from different Didcot schools.
Our children really looked the part as they dressed as evacuees. They got a real taste of what life was like for wartime children including sheltering in a real-life Anderson Shelter. They heard sound effects of bombing and the air raid siren which really brought it to life.
We had a lovely picnic lunch and watched a Punch & Judy Show then in the afternoon the children were shipped onto a steam train, complete with their gas mask boxes and name labels and were sent off "to the countryside!" They were greeted by the Lady of the Manor who sorted them into groups and gave them rural jobs to do including mucking out the cattle!
Finally they got a taste of some of the foods that were available during the war like SPAM, Bovril and jam Roly Poly - most enjoyed these!
We even made it into the newspaper: http://m.oxfordtimes.co.uk/news/11263281.Pupils_get_history_lesson_with_a_difference_to_mark_occasion/
Here are some of the many photos which we will try to upload onto Picaso asap.
