Last Friday, we were delighted to welcome volunteers from Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Europe) Ltd to Year 6 for a very special STEM activity. We donned our lab coats, gloves and safety goggles in order to........very gently pulp strawberries! We filtered the pulp and added a magical chemical concoction,which extracted the DNA from the strawberry. This rose to the top of our beaker and we were able to take it out and admire it (it looked like a bogie!). In Class 14, the prize for the biggest amount of DNA extracted went to Emily and Lucas, which was due to their very careful pulping of the strawberry. They were last to finish with the biggest reward! We all learnt lots about how to be scientists, about how the scientists leading the activity work with DNA to help with creating medicines.
